Holton Farms (Westminster, VT) is seeking interns for the 2011 growing season: Located in idyllic southern VT, 200 acre diversified farm with organic and conventional produce, including vegetables, fruits, herbs, maple operations, beef cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys and soon to have sheep. We have a large NYC CSA and focus on food justice in urban communities.Projects will vary depending on timing of stay.
We are most interested in retaining long-term interns, so if you only plan on staying a few weeks it won't be a good fit for us (although we might consider people on a case by case basis during peak harvest July-September). Ideally, we would like someone who has a desire to pursue a career in agriculture and is just looking for the right place to hone their skills.
Expectations: dilligent, hard-working, some knowledge of agriculture, greenhouse experience, experience with running CSA's, farmstands, farmers markets, love of animals, desire for a career in agriculture are all plusses.
The Most help is needed from late April through October.
Housing is a large 6 bedroom home 5 miles from the farm. Will be shared housing with our 10 male Jamaican workers, so must be okay with shared living space, although females will have their own rooms. These guys have been working for our farm for years and are part of the family.
Amtrak and Greyhound have daily service to nearest town (5 miles out). Will include free room, all free veggies you can eat, small weekly stipend. Strong interest in sustainable, organic farming, urban agriculture, animals, food policy, etc. preferred.
