Sam Dixon, RAFFL's Fall intern from Green Mountain College, took some time to put together a few thoughts on why he thinks it's important to eat local:
I propose that participating in local life at all levels remedies many of the problems we and our neighbors encounter. Growing, producing, purchasing, and eating local can help us all live in a more positive way. Here are some quick thoughts and links I hope inspire you.
Increase Local Economics and Employment
When you purchase a local product or some produce, that money goes directly into the community you see every day. Money earned by a local business owner is then spent on local employment, the purchasing of local supplies, and other community goods by building the local tax base. Local businesses account for 2 of 3 jobs created in the U.S. If you spend $100 at a local business $73 of that stays in the community, as opposed to at a non-local business where only $43 of the $100 stays in the community.
Counter the Concentration of Agriculture
"As of 2007, four companies owned 83.5% of the beef market—more than double the “highly concentrated” cut-off point of 40%. Similarly, the top four firms owned 66% of the hog industry and 58.5% of the broiler chicken industry. In the seed industry, four companies control 50% of the proprietary seed market and 43% of the commercial seed market worldwide. When it comes to genetically engineered (GE) crops, just one company, Monsanto, boasts control over 85% of U.S. corn acreage and 91% of U.S. soybean acreage."
