UVM Extension and Center for Sustainable Agriculture in partnership with the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, NOFA-Vermont, the Vermont Vegetable and Berry Growers Association and the Vermont Tree Fruit Growers Association, received a grant to investigate the feasibility of Vermont creating a food safety certification tailor-made for its small diversified produce farms. This certification would be designed specifically for farms serving local wholesale produce markets, such as schools and hospitals, that may need some best practices assurance (but will not require national or global GAPS or Good Agricultural Practices certification)
Our hope is that a Vermont food safety certification would be relatively practical and doable for small-diversified operations and may provide a working model for other states. Whether we like it or not, food safety awareness and legal requirements are now a real and growing part of our food system. Vermont has an opportunity and responsibility to write its own rules to benefit our own agricultural system, but we need your input!
Please come to this evening session to provide feedback on a Food Safety alternative for Vermont. This alternative has emerged from experience-based comments and suggestions from farmers, buyers and service providers.
During this session, UVM Extension’s Ginger Nickerson and Hans Estrin will set the stage, and then consultants Rose Wilson and Marne Coit will present initial research findings and field your comments and suggestions on an emerging alternative produce safety certification plan.
Rose and Marne will use your input to help draft the recommendations of their final report.
