Chainsaw 101 Workshops at Larson Farm - April 30

Chainsaws 101:  Safe Use and Maintenance for Beginners Learn to use and maintain chainsaws safely in a series of workshops coordinated by the UVM Extension New Farmer Project and the Women’s Ag Network.  Workshop instructor Jessica Ricketson is an experienced sawyer who regularly trains trail crews and students on the safe use of chainsaws in the field.  These workshops emphasize hands-on participation of all attendees and safe use of chainsaws at all times. Part I: Chainsaw Parts and Maintenance: In this session of the series, you will get to know the basics of a chainsaw.  You will learn how a chainsaw really “cuts,” what you need to know in order to mix fuel, the parts of the saw as well as basic maintenance.  Sharpening, cleaning, even how to replace that pesky pull-cord if it breaks!  We will also go over all personal protective gear, saw safety and methods for starting the saw.

April 30: 9:30 a.m-12:30 p.m, Larson Farm, Wells, VT

To register, go to http://vtnewfarmer.wufoo.com/forms/new-farmer-project-wagn-chainsaw-workshops/.

Part II:  Bucking and Limbing Logs Safely: Want to cut your own firewood?  Clear fallen logs?  This session will teach you safe and effective cutting techniques.  We will learn how to move logs safely on a log pile, how to use the right tools for lifting logs as well as how to read binds.  We will practice de-limbing fallen trees using safe and efficient techniques, and how to buck logs. Everyone will have a chance to use the saw and evaluate themselves on safety.
