Multi-Farm CSA Workshop - Next Tuesday at Champlain Orchards


Collaborative Marketing Workshop SeriesBeginning farmers in the Rutland Region of Vermont are invited to participate in this series of workshops focused on learning different ways to reach wholesale customers through collaborative marketing options.  These workshops are offered as part of RAFFL's New Farmer Initiative.

Workshop 1: Collaborative Marketing - Successful Models and Farmer Learning Session Tuesday, November 16, 6:00 - 8:00 pm Champlain Orchards, Shoreham VT (directions here) Please Register here! (the workshop is free.  Copies of Local Harvest: A Multifarm CSA Handbook will be given to the first 15 farms who register)In this workshop, participants will learn about a variety of marketing models that are successful because of multi-farm collaboration.  Sona Desai from the Intervale Center will present their research on different collaborative models including the Food Hub, managed by the Intervale Center.  Jill Perry, author of the SARE publication “Local Harvest: A Multifarm CSA Handbook” will present her experiences as farm worker, multi-farm CSA manager and researcher of this unique collaborative marketing model. Bill Suhr, owner of Champlain Orchards will discuss how he’s benefited from participating in the Intervale’s Food Hub and RAFFL’s Worksite CSA programs.  The session will end with a farmer-to-farmer conversation about the opportunities for collaborative marketing in the Rutland Region, including participation in the newly developed “worksite farmshare delivery program” piloted by RAFFL at the Rutland Regional Medical Center and Central Vermont Public Service.

Sona Desai Bio: Sona has been the Intervale Food Hub Manager at the Intervale Center since 2007. Her responsibilities include business development, supply coordination, marketing and sales, operations, budget management, staff supervision and strategic planning. As a former produce manager at a local health food store, Sona has a strong background in purchasing and marketing local produce. She has worked as part of the Intervale Center’s farm viability team and owned and operated her own farm for several years. She has strong communication skills and solid working relationships with both farmers and buyers. Sona holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Law from Vermont Law School and a B.S. in Natural Resources Management from Colorado State University.

Jill Perry Bio: Throughout the past ten years, Jill Perry has been involved in sustainable agriculture as an intern, harvester, marketer, manager, and writer.  In 2003 and 2004 she worked as a manager and grower for Local Harvest CSA, a multifarm CSA based in Concord, NH. Impressed with the innovative structure of Local Harvest CSA, she and fellow grower Scott Franzblau co-authored Local Harvest: A Multifarm CSA Handbook, which was published by Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program in 2007 and was expanded and re-released in 2010. Jill currently teaches high school English, and assists her husband, Rico Balzano, who is a farmer at Red Fire Farm in Granby, Massachusetts.
