Video and Recap: Pest and Disease Management Workshop (9/22)

The final Beginning Farmer Workshop of the summer was held last Wednesday at Greg Cox's Boardman Hill Farm.  It was an appropriate wrap up to a fantastic series.  Greg, as an individual and as RAFFL's board president, goes above and beyond to support new farmers in our community.  Just this season, he is "incubating" FIVE beginning growers/farm enterprises on his land.  Greg's generosity has, over the years, provided the support new farmers have needed to succeed and thrive as agricultural entrepreneurs.  THANK YOU Greg!  Now, on to the workshop recap.Watch the video to learn more about: Late Blight, Downy Mildew, Powdery Mildew, Swede Midge, Thrips, Galinsoga, Leek Moth, Emerald Ash Borer, Ash Yellows, Asian Longhorn Beetle, Slugs and Earwigs.  We also discussed beneficial insects and how to introduce them into your farm ecosystem. Here's the video (part of the workshop was a field walk, which didn't get filmed - sorry!) [vimeo http://www.vimeo.com/15423845]

PEOPLE RESOURCES & BOOKS to check out and learn from Four pros on Pest, Disease and Weed identification and management participated in the workshop.  Each of them are happy to answer your questions.  Also, if you have any questions as to a pest or disease you have on your farm, send your samples to Ann and Jon and they will identify them for FREE (a service offered to commercial growers) :

Disease and Pests of Vegetable Crops in Canada (this is a great identification book recommended by Jon and Ann.  You can buy the book from Ann for $55)

Will Allen's War on Bugs (Greg recommends this book to better understand the farm as a whole ecosystem, and where bugs fit in)

Managing Insects on Your Farm: a guide to ecological strategies - SARE publication (recommended by Wendy Sue, great reference guide)

Farmscaping to Enhance Biological Control - ATTRA Guide (recommended by Wendy Sue...especially helpful in understanding how to create "islands" of habitat and "corridors" to encourage beneficial insects to find and live on your farm)
